New research findings by Perths Telethon Institute for Child Health Research has found that alcohol consumption by pregnant women can result in children behavioral problems. From a sample of more than 2,000 mothers, it was determined that those who reported drinking heavily during their first trimester were as three times likely to have a child that suffered with anxiety and depressive disorders. The study also shows that the timing and amount of alcohol consumed can affect the types of behavior problems reported. In this research, low levels of alcohol showed no increase in the risk of harm to the baby. On the other hand, a high level of alcohol consumption increases the risk of having a child with problems. Heavy drinking in this study is classified as drinking more than a bottle of wine a week or its equivalents. The National Health and Medical Research Council thus suggest that to decrease the risk of behavioral problems, pregnant women should completely abstain from alcohol as well as drugs. So during pregnancy is one of the most important factor to consider and the mother should take care of her health as well as the health of the unborn child. Drugs is also harmful to unborn babies.
